Weekend, what are you playing?

gandamu

E3 2012 is done and we've been graced with a lot of delicious news, hella plenty trailers, and tons of gameplay.  But those new games aren't out yet, what are you playing?

Migoy: I accompanied my cousin to Greenhills VMall yesterday because he was going to get his first console bought with his own hard earned money.

He picked up this bad boy, a metallic red 320gig PlayStation 3 Slim . One of the latest released of the Ps3 slim from Sony with a gorgeous metallic paint job along with a chrome plate that holds the power and eject buttons. The embossed PS3 logo on the top is also chrome plated as opposed to the regular gloss plastic. Similar to me, his first game was also Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 which I still think is the hypest of hype. It looks like I won't be able to fraud my way to a win against him and his bros. since they have something to practice on now.

While testing out his brand new PS3, of course we popped in UMvC3 because we had to let the game update first and it seemed only fitting that that would be the first game his PS3 plays. UMvC3 was the main motivator for the purchase. After that I decided to lend them my copy of Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition since they mentioned that they played it at the arcade a few days back and even though UMvC3 is awesome, one can still get tired from playing a single fighting game for too long plus all the salt could ruin a good relationship between brothers. The game updated after downloading a hell of a lot of updates and we only played one match. I felt the huge difference between SSF4AE and Street Fighter x Tekken. Those games make look very similar but they are hella different.

I just got myself a 2nd-hand copy of Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit and we played a bunch of that too. It sucks that you are forced to play a somewhat bad "story mode" just to unlock the characters. Sure unlocking stuff is fun but c'mon, only 3 characters available at the start?

Before all the PS3 buying and spending a ton of money in less than an hour, me and my cousin played Mobile Suit Gundam EXTREME VS. Seriously, so much has changed from Next Plus that it looks like I have to completely relearn the game from the ground up. Plus the AI is mega cheap. Does anyone know if that game has 4-player VS? Because if so then I definitely have to save up and get two more PS3 controllers. The PS2 adapter doesn't work for EXTREME VS.

Now I'm off to watch the Pacquiao vs Bradley fight, happy weekend everyone!

Diablo 3

Quash: Still at it with Diablo 3. During the start of the weekend I continued my 42 Barbarian in hopes to get the guy to level 60 by the end of the week. Needed a break from my Demon Hunter. He's currently at act 3 on Inferno and the fact that everything one shots me is pretty scary. I did manage to progress by killing Siegebreaker, the second boss in Act 3, but now I'm stuck at the wave of enemies after him. Inferno is loads of fun(For gamers than want a challenge) and I want to feel Inferno as melee. I hear Blizzard is going to change a few things in Inferno to make things easier. I don't want that, so I'm really rushing my Barbarian to 60 to play Inferno before the announced nerf. As I write this, my Barbarian is now at level 51 in Hell Difficulty. Just 9 more to go!

Family Feudin' | Return of the Prodigal Bud

dat photoshop There's nothing better than having fun with your family and friends. Here at TooMuchGaming we like to have fun by playing video games.

My cousin just came home from his summer vacation in America. He passed by here since he dropped by his school (which is near my place) and brought his two brothers along with him and what perfect way to celebrate his return then by letting the salt flow in a couple of fighting games.

First up was of course Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, the fighting game that brings the most salt and yet is still the hypest thing around. We maybe scrubs but we love this game. After that was a little bit of Street Fighter x Tekken. 4-player scrable mode equals mayhem. A little bit of Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike was played but we didn't hang there long. I also had them try out Skullgirls but wasn't streamed because I had display setup the wrong way.

After all the fighting games we went into one of the best 4-player games out there, NBA JAM. I have NBA JAM: On Fire Edition saved on my PS3 and we used to play the bejeezus out of NBA JAM on the Wii. With some awkward games at the start since we had to adjust ourselves with the PS3's controls, we eventually got the hang of things (for the most part) and had a blast. I know it may not be the most entertaining thing to watch but I archived what was streamed to my personal youtube channel and made a playlist for them.

These games weren't played in sequence since we switched things up but I grouped the games together to avoid confusion. Part 1 for both UMvC3 and NBA JAM I forgot to change the audio source to my laptop microphone so that's why you'll hear game audio, skip to part 2 to hear us being stupid while having hella fun.

I used Flash Media Live Encoder to stream this with the video bitrate set to only 350kbps due to my low upload speed (0.47kbps) but the videos are still very watchable. Just don't expect anything remotely close to HD.

E3 2012: The highs and lows of the big three

E3 2012 E3 press conferences are over and the show floor is open. Who got most of the attention? Which press conference was the best? Well, lets start by saying - E3 2012 press conference's overall was pretty bad. While there were amazing game demo's, the overall presentation for the big three left a bad taste in my mouth. With Microsoft's Usher performance that came out of nowhere, to Sony's Wonderbook, to Nintendo having awkward discussions on stage, each press conference made me shake my head in disappointment. Here are the highs and lows of the big three's press conferences.

Microsoft Press Conference

+ Great third-party game demos - This shocked me in Microsoft's press conference. Game's like Tomb Raider, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, and even Resident Evil 6 made its appearance at the Microsoft stage, impressing the audience with a live gameplay demo.Tomb Raider and Splinter Cell is definitely on my to-buy list. Resident Evil 6 though I need more convincing. Is it even Resident Evil anymore?

- No new exclusive Xbox 360 titles - This is what I was hoping to see during the press conference - A reveal of a new title that could stand side by side with Microsoft's most beloved franchises. Instead, we got the a safe lineup - Halo 4 and Gears of War: Judgement. People will still love it I'm sure, but just one new title would do for me.

Microsoft SmartGlass

+ Microsoft SmartGlass - Microsoft revealed a neat application. This is their answer to Wii U's gamepad features and pretty much offers the same deal. An extra screen and yet another way to control your console. What makes SmartGlass amazing is the fact that you can use this application on any smartphone or tablet device. As long as your device is being runned by Windows 8, iOS, or Android, you can use SmartGlass. Pure genius Microsoft, but what a low blow.

- Kinect heavy announcements - Sadly, this was inevitable. If we had to predict what Microsoft would do for this E3, it would be them going heavy with the Kinect, and that's what they did. Kinect's voice recognition was presented in a lot of presentations. From Splinter Cell being able to use your voice to call support, to Madden 13.  They also announced a number of Kinect games as well as a game that has a similar concept to Angry Birds. Kudos to Microsoft though for jumbling those Kinect announcements with third-party game demos. It was bad enough seeing them, but seeing them revealed one after the other is bad.

- Dance Central 3 reveal with Usher performance - Yes! They actually had Usher show up and perform. And were not talking about a 1 minute short performance, I'm talking about a whole song. When Dance Central 3 was revealed, instead of just showing the same old game(Because thats really what it is) they dumped the crowd with Usher, with the Dance Central 3 being shown in the monitors during the performance. I vowed never to see an Usher performance, but I did thanks to Microsoft. It was a trap!

Sony Press Conference

+ Reveal of David Cage's new game - Beyond: Two Souls - Sony always states that they are always in the mercy of core gamers and they tried to show that by starting the show with a new title exclusive to Playstation 3. Exclusives are pretty rare now, and I'm happy to see new 1st party titles showing up and taking the risks. Beyond: Two Souls is Heavy Rain creator's next game. To sum it up real quick - Its Heavy Rain with a lot more action. That's how I understand it. The trailer did not give much on how the game is played but Quantic Dreams are aiming to bring the same quality shown in Heavy Rain but add more excitement to the gamers. The protagonist is also played by Ellen Page. Funny how she is sort of linked to two PS3 exclusives.

Playstation Wonderbook

- Wonderbook - This was pretty unusual, Definitely aimed for the casual market, Wonderbook is a new peripheral for the Playstation 3 that serves as an augmented reality device. You place the book on your lap, and with the help of the PS eye, you can see intractable images in Wonderbook in your TV. Think of it as 3DS's augmented reality feature with the cards. It's a good piece of tech but looks a bit raw for now. The fact that it only has one title for it called the Book of Spells (being collaborated with J. K Rowling) and that you need the PS Move and the PS Eye as well to make it work. Its a educational device for children but we need to see more.

- Not many PS Vita announcements - We all know the PS Vita is only a few months old, but we also know that the handheld market is pretty darn crowded these days. They needed more titles to keep people interested and prevent dust from gathering on their devices. Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified and Playstation: All-Stars Battle Royale cross play was a good start, but it's not enough. I'm sure Vita owners agree.

+ The Last of Us Gameplay Demo - This is what I was waiting for - First look at The Last of Us gameplay, and boy, did it deliver. If Ellie's AI is actually a reliable source in the game, then Naughty Dog succeeded. We all know how much of a pain AI companions can be, so hopefully they found a solution to that problem. Sony is really pushing exclusive titles for the Playstation 3 and kudos to them for taking such risks. New IP's are always a risk since its unfamiliar to the market.

- No Kevin Butler - Come on Sony! We all know he is the perfect host for E3. No KB on a Sony press conference feels wrong and you know it.

Nintendo Press Conference

+ Pikmin 3 announcement - Nintendo needs exclusive titles, and Pikmin 3 felt like a good start. But from how they revealed the game gave you an idea that this wasn't their focus. While Pikmin 3 looked great with better graphics and such, most of the presentation was about the Wii U gamepay and what it gives the player.

- Third Party support feels a bit weak still - With Nintendo having third-party support, I was expecting a world premiere of a game coming from a big company. Instead, we got Batman Arkham City : Armored Edition - A game almost a year old with some Wii U features. No matter what they say, it's still an old game, and putting new costume, and new ways to play the game doesn't make it worth the full retail price.

- Too much emphasis on the Wii U GamePad - It really felt like part 2 when they revealed the Wii U. We know what it can do already, but can you give us a reason to buy the Wii U console? I consider the new controller amazing, but with so much focus on it, and no focus at all on the console, can you make the GamePad a compatible with the Wii? So I can buy it separately for it? Because you brought a good presentation for it, and now all I want is just that controller. Screw the console.

+ Zombi U announcement - This is what we needed to see, but that was just it. Zombi U is exclusive to the Wii U and it looks amazing. A perfect way to use the new features of the console and I really can't wait to see more if it. This is what we wanted from the Nintendo presentation - Game reveals to make us want the console. Not a detailed explanation of how to play Luigi's Ghost Mansion with the Wii U GamePad features. Seriously, that was just too long.

- No Zelda, Smash Bros, Mario, Metroid for the Wii U - I really don't understand Nintendo. They announce third-party support and graphics somewhat in-par with current consoles, but they don't give any flagship exclusive to get us all excited inside. Yes we do want a Zelda or Mario game with the same graphics power as the 360 and PS3. At least one big game announcement like that would cover core gamers, but sadly we'll have to settle with Pikmin 3. Better than having nothing at all I guess. It was announced that a new Mario game for the Wii U would be revealed. But all we got was Super Mario Bros. U, exactly the same game now on the 3DS and Wii, just added features thanks to the GamePad... again.

So there you have it. Not the E3 press conference I was looking for. Especially with Nintendo, they are first in line to bring us the next-gen console. Sadly, this doesn't look like it... yet. It was make or break, impress us or leave a bad first impression forever. Who won E3 among the three? None. If I had to pick a press conference, I'd go with Ubisoft. Have you seen Watch Dogs? Great reveal.

E3 is not over yet. The press conferences may be over but there are still two days for other companies to show off their games to the public. Go ahead to Gamespot or GameTrailers to see live coverages of each third-party game in E3.

Weekend, what are you playing?

It's the first week of the June and E3 is literally just days away. All the big reveals are slowly coming out. But for now, what have you been playing this weekend? Quash: What a surprise, I'm still playing Diablo 3! I'm currently at act 3 on Inferno with my Demon Hunter and it's crazy how life doesn't matter at this point. I've given all hope of  increasing my life and resistance to certain elements since enemies hit me way past my full life. Believe me, I've tried upping my defenses but doing so lowers my damage that leaves me with longer fights against groups. It's seems impossible to hit a fine balance to do enough damage and at least survive one hit from anything. Now I'm gearing up my Demon Hunter on purely damage. Since I get one shot anyway at this point, might as well deal tremendous damage and avoid getting hit at all.

Not all was spent on Diablo 3 this weekend though. A couple of friends came over for some drinks and we decided to play some Street Fighter 4. It felt great playing a fighting game again. I was a bit rusty, but we all were since it's been months.

Migoy: I actually didn't get to play a videogame for Saturday which is ironic since I did buy one that very same day. Sure I popped the disc in to let it install, update and to see if it works but I don't consider that playing the game. I DID get to play stuff on Sunday though.

Started Dragon's Dogma, it's pretty cool so far but since I just started out it's not all that exciting yet but it is very very interesting. Hoping to put in more time in that game.

Next up is The Walking Dead The Game. I found out that episode 1 is only $4.99 and after I got Skullgirls with a $20 PSN card, I had just enough left to get it. I did end up finishing it the same night on my first playthrough but there is incentive to replay it again (different morality choices) which I think justifies the 5 dollar purchase for a 2 hour game.

I livestreamed my whole first playthrough on our TwitchTV channel and uploaded it to my personal youtube channel.

Recent Buys: Episode 9 - Dragon's Standing Dogma [Update]

yo videogames shirt

Just a week since my previous Recent Buys post and already we have a new episode. This time with an actual videogame.

First things first though. I finally wore my "YO VIDEO GAMES" shirt for the first time and I'm glad to see that I noticed wuite a few people actually took notice of what was printed on it. A small victory but it made me feel proud to wear it. Special thanks to Mac Sorio for the shirt.

blazepro ps3 stand 01

On to business. I finally convinced myself to get the Blazepro Professional Vertical Stand (why do companies like putting the word "professional" on everything?) for the PS3 Slim. Not only does it secure your PS3 while keeping it upright but it can also hold up to 6 game cases, has charging bays for a PSMove controller and a Navigation controller, and also store and charge two PlayStation Dual Shock 3 controllers. What sold me on this were the Dual Shock 3 holders/chargers. I originally wanted to get the Nyko Charge Base 3 for PlayStation 3 but other than it being sold out at Datablitz in Greenhills, it also went for 2900php or something along those lines. It was pretty mad expensive for a controller charging base but boy was it fancy, it uses magnets to connect the controller to the base. Another choice was the Energizer PS3 Charge Station. Similar in design with the Nyko one but instead of using magnets, the controllers would simply attach to a mini-USB connector sticking out of the holders. The holders would then light up while charging. That one went for 1900php or so. The Blazepro stand only went for 675php, not a very hard choice to make. Not only were the Nyko and Energizer charging docks more expensive, they would also take up a lot of space which the table I use for storing Ziggy (my PS3) had very little off. I didn't NEED the stand but compared to the other two choices, the stand was the most practical.

doom be chillin'

The slots for the game cases is a little tight so I might not use those. I don't own a PSMove controller or any games that feature Move support but the space for them is a perfect fit for the small "South Park"-ish Dr. Doom figure I got so Doom be chillin. The stand comes with a USB cable that connects the charged to the USB ports on the front of the PS3 Slim. The cable comes with a USB extension port to make up for the port that the stand it using to charge controllers with so that's pretty cool.

caved for dragon's dogma

As for the actual videogame that I bought, that would be Dragon's Dogma. Capcom's latest action RPG that feature multiple gameplay elements found in a lot of different games that are out now. Imagine Shadow of the Colossus meets Monster Hunter meets Skyrim. I was not planning to get this game since it goes for a whopping 1750php at Datablitz but the gameplay looks really fun and since you hire pawns online, missing out on such a feature while the game is still new would be such a waste. In other words, I caved. I have not actually tried the game out yet but I'll probably talk about it in this week's Weekend post.

9/3/2012

Dragon's Dogma comes with a redeem code for the demo of Resident Evil 6. The demo comes out on 07/03/2012 for Xbox360 users and on 09/04/2012 for PS3 users. I find it cool that the redeem code isn't on a separate sheet of paper but instead on the underside of the game cover. Now this is eco-friendly done right.

Update: I purchased a game the day after making this post. To get Skullgirls I got a $20 PSN card because the game was $14.99. That left me with 5 bucks which was just right for episode 1 of The Walking Dead The Game. It may just be a 2 hour game but playing this episode more than once makes up for it since the choices you make can affect current situations and even events in the next episodes. If you like the comic and/or TV series of The Walking Dead then I definitely recommend purchasing episode 1. Telltale tells a good tale, you can count on that.
