Blizzard has announced a remaster of the classic action RPG Diablo II calling it Diablo II: Resurrected, a game that inspired a series of games defining a beloved genre to what it is today. A trailer was released showing the visual changes done in this remaster.

Diablo 2 Resurrected will be released on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC later this year. A techincal alpha for the game is planned on the PC platform but no date was given during the reveal of the remaster.

Based on the trailer, the 2D graphics, which are now greatly pixelated in todays resolution, have been painted over with new 3D rendered models that completely change the aesthetic of the game as the team is focused to deliver an over 20-years old classic with a new coat of paint. Changes that would make it fit in today’s platforms.

In an interview with Polygon, executive producer of the Diablo franchise over at Blizzard said “We’re not reverse-engineering it; we’re not rebuilding it and trying to make it look and sound like [Diablo 2]. This is [Diablo 2]. [...] It’s right there, underneath the surface. The entire simulation, the engine for this game, that lifeblood of this game, is [Diablo 2] right underneath. So there’s a toggle switch, a legacy toggle, that when you press the button, you’ll see behind the curtains, and there is Diablo 2 in 2D sprites running right there, and you can play the way that you played 20 years ago.”

The game will feature the same content as the original and it’s only expansion Lord of Destruction. All seven classes are playable and the balance and itemization that’s available today will retain in Resurrected.

Blizzard announced that Diablo 2 Resurrected will featured cross-progression and more new features found in this remaster will be discussed during BlizzConline, Blizzard’s 3-day online event, which everyone can watch for free right now.

The next entry in the series, Diablo IV, is not expected to release this year, so having Diablo 2 Resurrected this year will keep us busy for the time being. The remaster will be priced at $39.99 at launch.
