Valheim's Hearth and Home update detailed through short spotlight videos

After some delay on the upcoming Hearth and Home update for Irongate studios’ Viking survival game Valheim, it looks like they’re ramping up it’s release by detailing each change and addition coming in the major update through a series of spotlight videos.

The latest spotlight video introduces a series of new cooking ingredients that will be added to the game. A slab of fresh meat found in deer boar and wolf will now have their own distinct appearances and can be mixed with other ingredients such as onions for a more savory meal for your viking.

It will now be a process to make specific foods and will require you to upgrade your cooking stations such as your cauldron to make these new recipes. The making and bread now makes more sense as it’s now required to be baked in an oven to make either of those foods.

A new type of berry will be added to the game as well which allows players to projectile vomit their current food intake to free up space so you can eat another batch of food.

The changes to the types of food is appreciated and goes well with the new food system that comes in the Hearth and Home update. Food will be split into three categories as meals with a red icon will give you health, those with a yellow icon gives you more stamina, and the white gives you a mix of both. This change removes the food bar altogether and what replaces it is a timer for each food ingested to give players an idea if and when it’s time to eat again.

Another change is improvements on certain shield types like the tower shield, as it’s tweaked to be the go-to shield if you prefer a more defensive approach as it has a higher knockback compared to other shield types in the game. This goes well with the new stagger bar as the amount of hits you can take while blocking is now determined by your total health instead of stamina, so what you eat will compliment your preferred role in combat.

You can expect more spotlight videos coming in the near future to highlight each change coming in the Hearth and Home update. The next video is said to showcase the changes done to some of the weapons in the game.

Valheim was the sleeper hit game in the early months of 2021 as players flocked to play the Viking-themed survival game in its Early Access state. Streamers and other content creators jumped on the game and it was one of the most viewed and streamed games for months. In March, Valheim sold 5 million copies in just one month. At the time of the game’s release on Steam’s Early Access program in February, the studio had only 5 members working on the game.

The exact launch date of Valheim’s next major update has yet to be revealed and it is still set to come out in Q3 of 2021.
