Final Fantasy IX Turns 25: Will Square Enix Finally Announce a Remake?
/It’s July 7, 2025, and in the Philippines, we’re officially celebrating the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy IX. Over the years, fan demand for a Final Fantasy IX remake or remaster has grown louder, and right now, that demand feels like it’s at an all-time high.
Square Enix's 25th Anniversary Celebration
Since the start of the year, Square Enix has been steadily building up the Final Fantasy IX 25th anniversary celebration. A dedicated website is now live, and new Final Fantasy IX merchandise has gone on sale. However, there’s still no official confirmation of what fans have been waiting for: a remake.
The excitement surrounding this anniversary is impossible to miss. I genuinely hope Square Enix is paying attention to the overwhelming response they’re getting, especially after releasing new anniversary artwork (shown below) for the game. Posts like these continue to fuel speculation and hope that today, July 7, we might finally get the remake announcement fans have been craving.
The GeForce Now Leak: More Fuel for the Fire
Let’s also not forget the GeForce Now database leak, which revealed a list of unannounced projects that surfaced back in 2021. Over the years, many of the titles from that list have slowly been confirmed, which has only added more credibility to the leak. One of the projects included in that leak? A Final Fantasy IX remake.
The fact that so many games from that list have since been revealed makes it even harder to dismiss the possibility of an FF IX remake.
A Final Fantasy IX Remake Just Makes Sense
Remaking Final Fantasy IX wouldn’t be the worst idea. It’s still one of the most beloved entries in the franchise, cherished for its unforgettable characters, heartfelt story, and distinctive art style.
It’s also widely considered a standout title from the golden age of JRPGs. A time when the genre was shaping the childhoods of millions and producing some of the most iconic RPG experiences to date. Final Fantasy IX is one of those timeless games that a new generation of players truly deserves to experience.
But if Square Enix does move forward with a remake, I sincerely hope it doesn’t follow the drawn-out, multi-part release schedule we’ve seen with Final Fantasy VII Remake. This game deserves a proper remake. One that doesn’t take a decade to complete.
Fans around the world are watching closely today, and whatever Square Enix decides, it’s going to make waves. Whether we’re on the cusp of a major reveal or another round of disappointment remains to be seen.
