Everyone Is Getting Borderlands 3 Crossplay Soon, Except PlayStation
/ Carlos Hernandez
It looks like a new patch for Borderlands 3 is coming soon which enables crossplay support, allowing players from different platforms to group up and take on the crazies in Pandora and beyond together. Problem is, it looks like PlayStation 4 and 5 won’t be in on the fun.
CEO of developer Gearbox Software Randy Pitchford tweeted this week saying that their publisher required the devs to “remove crossplay support for PlayStation consoles” in order to obtain certification to release the patch. This means that Borderlands 3 cross-play will only be limited to Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Windows, Mac, and Stadia.
Good news or bad news first? Good News: An update for Borderlands 3 has been prepared for release that includes full crossplay support across all platforms. Bad News: For certification, we have been required by the publisher to remove crossplay support for PlayStation consoles.

Sony is known for being picky with crossplay support and it looks like their stance on the matter seems to remain the same, which is a big shame. During the time Minecraft was going crossplay, Sony initially didn’t allow crossplay in their platforms but eventually agreed to it in the future. Same goes for Rocket League back when it was enabling crossplay.
During the recent Epic vs. Apple trial, details surfaced that the Fortnite developer Epic Games had to pay for compensation to enable crossplay support in the PlayStation platform. In a report by Verge, Epic CEO Tim Sweeeney revealed that Sony is the only platform that requires such a compensation to allow crossplay.
Is this what publisher 2K and developer Gearbox Software are experiencing right now as they prepare Borderlands 3 to have crossplay support? It’s more likely the case. Pitchford didn’t reveal the reason for the removal and we’ll update you once more information is revealed on either side.
So far, I’ve been loving my new console. It truly feels like a generational leap from the original Switch, even if its core concept remains the same. This may be simply an iterative, straightforward improvement over the original system, but I guess the thinking is that as the saying goes, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
