Guild Wars 1’s New Expansion After Nearly 20 Years Launches in January 2027

ArenaNet isn't kidding when they say they'll be working on all three Guild Wars games simultaneously. They've just revealed Guild Wars Afterlife, a new expansion for the first game in nearly 20 years.

It offers a story mode and a new game mode that seems to be ArenaNet's take on the roguelite formula. Each run in this new dungeon features a skill-drafting system where you build a loadout that will hopefully carry you to the end and earn your rewards. Run through the dungeon again, and the results and overall experience will feel different.

The story and how expansive Afterlife will be remain to be seen, as the expansion could end up revolving primarily around this new game mode.

The Afterlife expansion is set to launch on January 13, 2027, on Steam and mobile devices, and will be priced at $30. However, there will be a pre-order discount, with the expansion costing $24 if purchased before launch.

Continued work on the first game is a big surprise and, honestly, isn't necessary in the grand scheme of things. But with the release of Guild Wars Reforged, a remaster of the original game, and its recent arrival on mobile devices, ArenaNet is clearly setting itself up to support and develop three MMORPGs at the same time: the original game, Guild Wars 2, and the upcoming Guild Wars 3.

That’s impressive considering the industry’s current state.
