Grand Theft Auto VI Delayed to May 2026

After months of silence following the first Grand Theft Auto VI trailer, Rockstar Games has finally shared an update: the next entry in the open-world franchise has been delayed and is now set to launch on May 26, 2026.

Why Was GTA VI Delayed?

Rockstar stated that it needs more time to deliver a game that meets fan expectations. This lines up with the studio’s history of polishing titles before launch.

Here’s the full statement.

Hi everyone,

Grand Theft Auto VI is now set to release on May 26, 2026.

We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.

With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.

We look forward to sharing more information with you soon.

Sincerely,
Rockstar Games

Since the first trailer in early December 2024, Rockstar has remained largely quiet, offering little in the way of updates or marketing. In 2025, speculation from the community filled the gap, with many believing the game would arrive in late September or early October — a theory partly fueled by Borderlands 4 moving up its release window.

We’ll share more as new details emerge. Stay tuned.
