Edward Kenway Voice Actor Hints at Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag Remake

During a meet-and-greet event, voice actor Matt Ryan openly hinted that an Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag remake might be in the works. When a fan told Ryan they had finished the game, he replied with a smile, “You might have to finish it again.”

The lighthearted exchange was thankfully caught on camera during the fan signing session. You can see the conversation below.

Ubisoft Has Yet to Confirm the Remake

Ubisoft has yet to make anything official, but rumors of a Black Flag remake have been circulating since 2024. That same year, Insider Gaming reported they were shown leaked footage of the remake running on Ubisoft’s Anvil Engine, though the source insisted the footage would never be made public.

Earlier this year, figure maker Pure Arts added fuel to the fire during a livestream showcasing new collectibles for the Assassin’s Creed series. Notably, protagonist Edward Kenway was missing from the new lineup. When asked, they mentioned, “There’s going to be something going on with Edward, and our PVC 1/8th scale statue will reflect that accordingly.” The team appeared unsure if the project had been publicly revealed yet, further hinting at something in development.

A Potential Trend for Ubisoft

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag remains one of the most beloved entries in the franchise as it’s praised for its pirate-themed naval combat. The reception was so good that Ubisoft eventually spun off those mechanics into a new IP that became Skull & Bones. We know how that turned out, though.

A remake would likely excite many fans, and if successful, could signal Ubisoft’s interest in revisiting past titles in a similar fashion to Capcom’s Resident Evil remakes. This approach could also give Ubisoft more breathing room before releasing the next mainline Assassin’s Creed entry, assuming, of course, that fans are eager to return to these older adventures and that the remake delivers a quality experience. Hopefully, it’s not just a visual upgrade and has more meaningful changes to gameplay and new additions to really spice up the reason to jump back.
