Next Witcher game confirmed to be in development, but what happens to Cyberpunk 2077?

CD Projekt RED have confirmed that they are officially working on a new game set in The Witcher game universe. This isn’t confirmed to be Witcher 4 as all they’ve said is that they are working on a new saga for the series, but they did say the game is being developed on Unreal Engine 5. It’s exciting news but it left me wondering - what happens to Cyberpunk 2077 now?

The post-launch DLC roadmap for CD Projekt RED’s Cyberpunk 2077 has been derailed since its launch as most of the time was spent fixing various bugs and issues found in the game across multiple platforms. Cyberpunk 2077 released in 2020 and it was only now that we got a next-gen version  mixed in with new content in the 1.5 patch, but these are minor additions like the ability to own apartments, new weapons, scopes, and more. More than a year later, it’s still nowhere near the state Witcher 3 was in terms of post-launch support.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was released in May of 2015 and received 16 free DLC after launch in the form of new armor sets, quests, alternative looks, a new game plus mode, and more. Soon after, the Hearts of Stone expansion was released in October 2015, then the Blood and Wine expansion in May 2016.

Will they deliver a similar amount of support at this point? It’s hard to tell if it will happen since focus and resources are likely being shuffled around in the studio for the new The Witcher game as they are stepping away from the studio’s RED engine and are now working with Unreal Engine 5.

At this point, they still seem keen to expand the Cyberpunk 2077 world at the very least. After the big Witcher announcement, quest director Pawel Sasko and Cyberpunk 2077’s official Twitter confirmed that an expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 is still being worked on.

Still a bit vague but the fact that they brought it up is a good sign, just don’t hold your breath as I don’t see major DLC coming out anytime soon.
