Sony Lifts Steam Region Lock on 4 PC Games in Over 100 Countries, Including the Philippines

Sony appears to be quietly lifting the region lock on four of its first-party titles on Steam: God of War Ragnarok, The Last of Us Part 2, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and Helldivers 2. As of now, these games are once again available for purchase in over 100 countries, including the Philippines.

Based on SteamDB, over 100 countries can now have access to these games through Steam.

This is a welcome development for many Southeast Asian countries that were previously blocked from accessing future Sony titles on Steam, following the backlash surrounding Helldivers 2's mandatory PSN account requirement.

Since the controversy began, Sony has remained largely silent, never officially addressing the country-specific restrictions. However, the gaming community has widely speculated that the bans were due to the absence of PSN support in certain regions, such as the Philippines, which still lacks an official PlayStation Network region, making it impossible for users to create a local PSN account.

Still Blocked in Select Countries

Despite the recent changes, these four games remain unavailable in certain countries, including:

  • Cuba

  • Iran

  • North Korea

  • Russia

  • Syria

  • Vietnam

Additionally, Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut is still region-locked in these same territories, suggesting that not all of Sony’s PC offerings have been unblocked.

What Triggered the Reversal?

It’s unclear what led to this shift, as Sony hasn’t issued a statement. However, the first sign of change came with Stellar Blade’s upcoming PC version, which was also region-locked when it was revealed and its Steam page was revealed. Developer Shift Up acknowledged the issue, and the restriction was soon lifted. Now, we’re seeing a broader pattern emerge with these four titles.

While this doesn’t solve everything, it’s a step in the right direction—especially for gamers in underserved regions who’ve long been excluded from full access to Sony’s growing PC catalog. Maybe more titles will be available in the coming days, who knows.

We’ll keep this updated if there are any more updates.
