Magic: Legends Shutting Down For Good On October 31

Cryptic Studios has announced that their free-to-play action RPG Magic: Legends will be shutting down on October 31. It didn’t even survive it’s open beta phase.

All in-game purchases done by players will be fully refunded through Arc Games and Epic Games Store. The devs also closed the in-game store to prevent any more future purchases.

Here’s a message from executive producer Steve Ricossa on the game’s closure:

Hello Planeswalkers,

It is with heavy hearts that we announce Magic: Legends will be shutting down on October 31, 2021. All players who spent money in-game across Arc and the Epic Games Store during the open beta will be refunded their full purchase amounts. Servers will remain open for play until closing day, however we will be closing the Zen Shop effective immediately. Later this week, all items will instead be purchasable using Aether, our free in-game currency.

Our vision for Magic: Legends missed the mark, but we are proud of what we achieved. Thanks to Wizards of the Coast, we got to bring the expansive Magic: The Gathering Multiverse to a wide audience and explore new angles within the established action RPG genre. We learned several valuable lessons along the way, and we will use them to improve Cryptic’s future development efforts.

Most importantly, we’d like to thank all of the players who explored the Multiverse with us and provided feedback during the Alpha and Beta testing phases. We couldn’t have gotten this far without you!

In case you want to give the game another go before the lights go out, servers for Magic: Legends will remain open until October 31, 2021 at exactly 11:59 PM Pacific,

With me being a fan of Magic: The Gathering and the action RPG genre, I too were one of the many players that jumped in to try out the open beta that went live on the Epic Games Store back in March. But it only took me 30 minutes to realize this isn’t for me as it featured a poorly executed gameplay concept that triggered no sense of excitement or interest to push forward. It also had a variety of technical issues from horrible lag, long loading times, to weird bugs during cutscenes, clearly pointing out that a lot of work is needed in order for the game to get any kind of traction going for them. Legends was also too aggressive in the game’s monetization efforts to a point that it had a powerful class hid under a paywall.. for a game still in the beta phase.

Apparently many agreed as it only took months for publisher Perfect World Entertainment and those at Cryptic Studios to throw in the towel. If you’re one of the players that gave the game a chance and spent real money on it and would like to know more details about the closure, be sure to check out game’s FAQ.
