Echoes of Aincrad: Sword Art Online Announced, Releasing in July 2026

Bandai Namco Entertainment has announced Echoes of Aincrad: Sword Art Online, a new RPG set in the floating castle of Aincrad featured in the famous anime series.

Sword Art Online revolves around the world of MMORPGs. For those unfamiliar with the anime, players are trapped in the game world, and if one dies in the game, they will also die in real life. The series has progressed to the main cast jumping into different games in each arc. In this game, there is no Kirito as the main focus, as we don’t follow the main cast of the series (though they will still be present in the game). Instead, players follow their own player-created character stuck in the same situation.

This is also an original story for the game, so you don’t need knowledge from prior games or catch up to the anime.

Bandai Namco shared the following description:

Echoes of Aincrad invites adventurers into a dynamic and vibrant world filled with challenges and unforgettable encounters, becoming a “player” in the game. Through an extensive avatar customisation, Echoes of Aincrad will place them as the true hero of this story. As the story progresses through quests and missions, players will be able to adapt and upgrade their equipment, weapons, and attributes, and select special skills to match their preferred playstyle while growing stronger as they level up. However, they will not journey alone, as the outcome of real-time combat will also rely on their chosen partner for each outing, deciding the stance they should take during fights. Whether it’s more aggressive or supportive, and as that bond deepens with their partner, players will unlock their partner’s powerful abilities.

Echoes of Aincrad Editions

Echoes of Aincrad will have three editions: the standard that comes with the game, and a Deluxe edition that contains the game’s expansion pack featuring the game’s future expansion DLC and a Starter pack DLC. Deluxe owners also get an early unlock to Death Game mode.

Echoes of Aincrad: Sword Art Online is set to release on July 9, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series and on July 10 for PC.
