Battlefield 2042 Will Not Feature A Single Player Campaign

EA and DICE have lifted the curtains on Battlefield 2042 and will be the first time a Battlefield game will not feature a full-length campaign as all efforts were spent in creating three distinct online multiplayer experiences.

No campaign. It was an inevitable change as the campaign in most shooters like Call of Duty or Battlefield doesn’t get much attention compared to their multiplayer counterpart. Call of Duty Black Ops 4 launched without a campaign and replaced it with a battle royale mode, a way to keep up with the current trend thanks to games like Fortnite and PUBG getting all the attention.

But just to be clear -Battlefield 2042 didn’t pass on a campaign mode for another battle royale game. DICE simply went all in on multiplayer.

Will we have some sort of narrative to follow in Battlefield 2042? Yes… but that’s not clear at the moment as to how. According to a report by VG247, with a campaign absent, the game is “going to infuse narrative into its various multiplayer modes.” Whatever story they have planned for the game will progress in each season. Post launch, there will be 4 seasons to look forward to in a year, each with their own batch of content, each with their own Battle Pass. Yes, the battle pass system is everywhere.

According to a PlayStation Blog post, Battlefield 2042 will feature three gameplay pillars. “Experiences”, if you will, and these three completes the whole package. So far, only two are mentioned, but the first one is All Out Warfare, which includes the basic game modes every Battlefield fan is familiar with - Conquest and Breakthrough. Both these modes will support up to 128 players on PC and current-gen consoles, with previous gens limited to just 64 (sorry PS4, Xbox One).

The other one is Hazard Zone but not much was given aside from it focusing on tight squad combat. We are not entirely sure what that means yet but EA and DICE wanted the message to be clear that this is not a battle royale mode. It will be all clear at a later date, they say.

The last pillar is still unknown. What we do know is that it’s being build by the folks at DICE LA an we’ll know about this mystery pillar at a later date.

All Out Warfare will have seven maps at launch

All Out Warfare seems to be the center of the Battlefield 2042 as it contains what fans know and love and it will have seven maps in total: Kaleidoscope, Manifest, Orbital, Discarded, Renewal, Hourglass, and Breakaway. Dynamic events will plague the battlefield as each one will be map-specific. Sandstorms will be a problem in one map while a devastating tornado will be present in the next.

At this point, with no gameplay footage available, it’s hard to see how big of an impact it these events will be on maps that host up to 128 players. Will a tornado destroy nearby buildings and change the landscape of that area once it’s gone? If so, we’ve experience something similar as Battlefield 4 features Levolution, a featured named weird but is a cool concept that has buildings or radar dishes falling if the players in the map triggers it, changing the area for the rest of the match.

All of this sounds great but with it’s currently hard to swallow at the moment without much details on the other two “pillars” as I consider them filling in for what could have been a campaign. We also don’t have any actual gameplay footage to digest so, let’s see if it’s an easier sell priced as a full priced game ($60) by the end of this week

The Battlefield 2042’s trailer is all we have to watch over and over but more will be shown as the gameplay reveal is scheduled to go live on June 13, while E3 2021 is ongoing.

Battlefield 2042 is out October 22 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
