Activision, and Treyarch, and Raven Software released our first good look at Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, specifically the campaign of the game and more details of the shooter that’s set to launch on November 13, 2020.

Check out the latest trailer below, which again, focuses on the single-player campaign.

Cold War is going back to the standard lineup for the Black Ops series which includes a single-player campaign, good ol’ Call of Duty multiplayer, and co-op Zombies. This is the Call of Duty game that will have a release in both the current and next-gen consoles this is what we know about the shooter so far.

Call of Duy: Black Ops Cold War Single-Player Campaign

Weirdly enough, Cold War is going to be considered as a direct sequel to 2010’s Call of Duty: Black Ops, taking place in 1981 bringing back common faces like Alex Woods, Frank Mason, and Jason Hudson. It’s a conspiracy story during the middle of a Cold War between the US and the Soviet Union and the player is tasked to hunt down a Soviet spy only known as “Perseus” as he’s appeared to be active once again. Perseus in the game and the events that will revolve around him are based off actual research regarding the Cold War but we don’t know at what length.

The campaign will bring players in various locales like East Berlin, Turkey, Vietnam, and of course Moscow.

The campaign is being developed together with Treyarch and Raven Software.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Multiplayer

This is still unknown as of this writing since Activation and Treyarch are planning to reveal the multiplayer portion of Cold War on September 10, 2020 via Call of Duty’s official Twitch channel. But it is confirmed that Multiplayer will be given free maps post-launch and the game will feature not only cross-platform support but cross-generation support, meaning PS4 players can play against Xbox Series X players, for example.

Cold War’s multiplayer will also feature a Battle Pass system that we’ve been made accustomed to thanks to the rise of battle royale titles as well.

An Open Beta will be available for multiplayer and more details about that will be available soon but pre-ordering a digital copy of Cold War will give you early access to the Open Beta.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies

Call of Duty’s Zombies will make a return but they haven’t shared details about the co-op mode, only that it will be part of the Cold War package. You can expect more details about this version of Zombies probably after the reveal of Multiplayer.

Call of Duty: Warzone is here to stay

We are not going to get a new version of Call of Duty’s take on battle royale anytime soon, but you can expect Warzone to live alongside Cold War as they plan to incorporate new features and content as they release new titles from the Call of Duty franchise. It’s unclear though how they are going to marry Warzone and new titles like Cold War, but shared progression is confirmed between the two titles.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War for Next Generation Consoles

Cold War will be the Call of Duty title in-between the console generation shift, which means we will have a current-gen version and a next-gen version of the game. The biggest difference between the two will be the price point upgrading, and cross-compatibility between consoles.

It was reported by gamesindustry.biz and other sites that the next-gen versions of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will cost $70, following Take-Two’s move in increasing the price of the next-gen versions of NBA 2k21.

Cross-generation compatibility and upgrades

In terms of compatibility, the physical discs of Cold War for the PS4 and Xbox One will apparently work on their next-gen counterparts, but sadly will not include “next-generation features, such as higher framerate, hardware-based ray-tracing, faster load times, and more.” according to Activision.

However, here’s the confusing part - a disc copy of Cold War on the Xbox Series X will be payable on the Xbox One. But for PlayStation owners, a PS5 disc copy of the game will not work on the PS4. It’s weird.

if you’re planning to buy current gen copies of Cold War on the PS4 and hoping to upgrade to the PS5 version of the game, the best option will have to be the digital cross-gen bundle that will cost $70 if you are planning to get it for the PS4 or Xbox One, giving you digital copies of the next-gen version of the game. Or, vice-versa, by buying the digital cross-gen bundle for next-gen consoles, giving you copies of current-gen (PS4/Xbox One) versions of the game.

There’s also a digital Ultimate edition available on both generations that adds more goodies alongside access to both versions of the game in your respective console of choice.

It’s pretty confusing, but all the details can be found in Activision’s FAQ on Cold War.

Activision and Treyarch has more to reveal as we slowly get closer to the launch of Cold War. We’ll update this page as more details come to light.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will launch on November 13 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X version of the game will be available at a later date after the next-gen consoles have launched.
