Stranger Than Heaven Launches This Winter, Cast and Setting Detailed

Sega revealed that developer RGG Studio’s upcoming title Stranger Than Heaven, is set to release sometime in Winter 2026. They also detailed the game’s main cast, a brief description of the combat system, the story’s various settings and premise, and more.

Don’t be fooled by the name as this is pretty much another prequel Yakuza/Like a Dragon title focused on the founding of the Tojo clan, a key organization for the whole Yakuza and Like a Dragon series. Set in multiple timelines to tell the story of Makoto Daito, a teenager born to an American father and a Japanese mother. Due to his mixed heritage, he was considered an outcast and eventually sought a better life in Japan..

What’s interesting about Stranger Than Heaven is that the story will allow players to explore five eras of Japan:

  • 1915 – Kokura, Fukuoka (steelworks town)

  • 1929 – Kure, Hiroshima (naval shipyard, heavy organized crime influence)

  • 1943 – Osaka, Minami (entertainment district amid rising global tensions)

  • 1951 – Atami, Shizuoka (postwar tourism hotspot)

  • 1965 – Shinjuku, Tokyo (Kamurocho)

The best thing out of this is how each era shows the evolution of Japan as technology evolves and lifestyles change in each era.

Combat and the art of being a Showman

It also looks more grounded and dark in terms of tone, plus this is the first time I see a lot of blood and brutal attacks like stabbing with knives, hammers, and swords. RGG details the combat of having the player somewhat have control over Makoto’s left and right arms independently, allowing players to mix jabs and do specific attacks and follow-ups.

Makoto eventually finds a career in being a showman/promoter as the player will be coming across various entertainment talents that Makoto will recruit for the many shows he will help produce to earn money. You’ll be handling the promotion of each show you plan to work on, the setting and the setlist, and so on to hopefully make it a big success.

There’s also a system where players can pick up inspirations for music compositions through the various sounds found and heard in the game. From a person snoring, an enemy’s hammer hitting the wooden floor, to a train passing by, each of these can be picked up and later be used to create certain music as you also act as a producer in this game. Each era in the game is said to have different sounds to pick up.

Stranger Than Heaven main cast

The presentation also revealed the game’s main cast, which features Yu Shirota, Dean Fujioka, Snoop Dogg, Moeka Hoshi, Tori Kelly, Akio Otsuka, Tokuma Nishioka, Satoshi Fujihara (Official HIGE DANdism), Cordell Broadus, Ado, and Bunta Sugawara (the late actor, recreated via CG with family and Toei Company's consent, voiced by Takashi Ukaji).

If you want a clear detail of each cast member and Stranger Than Heaven’s two main systems, you can have a look at Sega’s livestream here, which officially starts at the 1 hour mark as it’s roughly 30-minutes long.
