Once Overwatch 2 Goes Live This October, It Will Replace the Original Game

Blizzard have confirmed that once the multiplayer portion of Overwatch 2 goes live it will replace the original game, making players unable to play the original game after its October launch.

During a Reddit AMA, Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller confirmed that the multiplayer portion of the sequel will replace the current live service game once it goes live on October 4.

Replacing the original game with Overwatch 2’s multiplayer component is a rather unusual choice, but this further confirms that all the cosmetics and other rewards a player have earned in the first game will be available in the sequel.

The biggest change in terms of gameplay between the two games is simply Overwatch 2 now being a 5v5 format which features 1 tank role per team as opposed to the 6v6 format with 2 tank roles. Other than that, it’s the same team-based shooter with new heroes, game modes, and other content.

Blizzard did struggle to frequently support the team hero shooter as most of their efforts in recent years were spent working on the sequel. With this decision, it’s clear they are not planning to support two games at the same time.

Overwatch 2 will launch on October 4 as a free-to-play title for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC vai Battle.net. This launch only includes the PVP portion of the game as the planned PVE content is slated to release sometime next year.

Blizzard recently detailed their new tank Junker Queen, explaining her toolkit ahead of the June 28 beta.
