New World Guide: Best way to level up Engineering

Engineering is a trading craft skill in Amazon Game Studios’ MMO New World. If you’re interested in crafting your own ammunition for bows and muskets, or simply want your own gathering tools, leveling Engineering will be an ideal choice as you explore Aeterum. There will be a lot of items to craft but we found these methods to be the best way to level up your Engineering and be efficient with your materials.

Leveling Engineering in New World

For new players, simply crafting an item in the Workshop found in all settlements will earn you experience towards your Engineering. The Trade skill is mostly used to craft ammunition for ranged weapons and also craft ranged weapons like bows and muskets. Engineering is also used to craft higher gathering tools.

Engineering level 0 - 50

There’s a variety of ways to level up your Engineering. For those starting out, crafting Iron Arrows is a good path if you can spare the Iron Ingot.

Iron Arrows recipe

  • 4 Iron Ingot

  • 2 Timber

  • 3 Feathers

Timber can be made through the wood you pick up when chopping Young trees and feathers can be plucked from Turkeys roaming the world. Iron Arrows will speed up your leveling process but recently Iron Ingots are rather valuable as it’s required in a lot of recipes from different crafting skills.

If you’re not keen on making arrows all the way to 50, crafting proficiency boosters is a good option as well once you reach level 20. Not only will it be a sought after item in the Trading Post by other players, it will also give you a good amount of experience, and it just requires some motes and water to craft.

Weak Proficiency Booster recipe

  • 1 Air Mote

  • 1 Soul Mote

  • 1 Water

The only problem is this method requires a player with a high harvesting skill as air motes can be found in nodes like Lightning Bettles, Shockspires, and Shockbulbs. While Soul Motes can be found from Soulsprouts, Soulspires, or Soulwyrms.

Level 50 - 200

Once you hit the level 50 mark, you can consider crafting more Iron Arrows or proficiency boosters all the way to level 200. We noticed that crafting lower tier items even when you’re on a higher Engineering level is more efficient because the materials are cheaper and items like Iron Arrows or proficiency boosters still provide a good amount of experience towards your Engineering.

Based on how valuable Iron Ingots remain to be for many trade or refining skills, making anything with Iron to level up your crafting might be difficult or even expensive, which is why we found Gunpowder to be a good alternative.

Gunpowder can be crafted to level up to as high as 200. This is not only a vital item when crafting ammunition for muskets, but also a cheap item to make, making it a solid choice for leveling Engineering. It only requires a tier 2 workshop and a bit of time to gather the materials.

Gunpowder recipe

  • 5 Charcoal

  • 2 Flint

  • 1 Saltpeter

Where to find Charcoal

You can make charcoal with a Smelter station found in any settlement through the Smelting Refining Skill. Pick up some Green wood by looting bushes or chopping down Young Trees as that’s all you need to make charcoal. Two green wood equates to one charcoal, so start chopping.

Where to find flint

The second item required to make Gunpowder is Flint. If you’ve been playing New World for at least an hour, you know this item. There are great farming spots for Flint as you’ll need a lot of these rocks if you choose to mainly level through Gunpowder, but essentially this item can be found almost everywhere in the game.

Where to find Saltpeter

This is probably the most difficult as Saltpeter can only be found in certain locations. If you know where to look, it shouldn’t be a problem. Saltpeter can be found in pretty much all caves and mines. If you see a wolf cave or a mining area with some enemies guarding it, there’s likely saltpeter nodes scattered around the area for you to pick up.

If flint or Saltpeter is oversaturated in your server to a point that one costs less than 0.50 gold, buying it off the Trading Post isn’t a bad idea if you want to save time and can spare the cash.

That’s all you need to know about efficiently leveling up your Engineering. It’s rather easy if you compare it to leveling crafting professions in other games. You can consider crafting higher tier items as you level up but we find it more problematic due to the materials needed to do so. Some also need a higher Workshop tier, which can be a pain as station’s tier is based on the results of Wars and Invasions in the settlement.

Until Amazon updates the amount of experience you can earn in crafting, going for lower tier items like the ones mentioned above is the most efficient way to go right now.
