As promised, developer Firaxis Games released a gameplay trailer to give us our first look at Marvel’s Midnight Suns gameplay, and it reveals that this tactical turn-based strategy game will have a card-based combat system.

An extended version detailing Midnight Sun’s gameplay was released as well, courtesy of IGN.

This was a bit of a surprise as I wasn’t expecting Firaxis to go for the card-system route. It’s not unique as there are other games that come to mind like Slay the Spire, only this time you’re handling a team of three heroes with the interactable environments that could be used to your advantage.

With a system like this, you are at the mercy of what you draw while in a mission, forcing players to think on their feet to get the best possible outcome. Then, you have coordinated attacks to think about, so team composition is important.

As you progress, you gain new cards to put in your deck and can even get a chance to upgrade them.

Now, if you’re worried if such a system will include microtransactions or loot boxes that will make Midnight Suns a pay-to-win type of game - don’t worry. Many have voiced this particular concern and the devs have confirmed that this will not be the case. They will only have purely cosmetic character skins for purchase.

Firaxis says the Abbey, the Midnight Suns’ base of operations, will offer "hours of rewarding exploration, gameplay, and story". Improving your bond with your fellow heroes will improve your tag-team abilities, taking a long stroll with Tony Stark will be beneficial in the long run .

And no, you won’t get to romance any of these characters. There will be no romance happening in Midnight Suns, as confirmed by IGN.

The strategy game will feature 12 playable characters at launch.

Midnight Suns is set to come out on March 2022 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Firaxis Games plans to show more of the game in action on September 7, 11:30 PT / September 8, 2:30 AM GMT+8.
