During ESGS 2019, Square Enix was present to feature Final Fantasy Brave Exvius to attendees at the show floor, then held a press conference on the last day of ESGS 2019, which featured Final Fantasy Brave Exvius game producers Kei Hirono and Hiroki Fujimoto talking about the latest on Brave Exvius and their upcoming mobile game War of the Visions.

Final Fantasy Brave Exvius’ story continues

To start things off, Hirono and Fujimoto gave us an update on Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, the free-to-play mobile game with over 40 million downloads worldwide. Brave Exvius currently supports 6 different languages and will soon add two more to expand its reach in Southeast Asia - Thai and Indonesian Bahasa.

Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is a turn-based RPG Gacha game catering to the Final Fantasy fanbase. There’s no denial of the game’s practices in monetization and how to apply incentives for players to invest in the game. Again — this is a Gacha game. But what’s interesting is their commitment to providing a unique story that somehow has iconic Final Fantasy characters showing up in Brave Exvius.

This unique story continues, as Fujimoto and Hirono stated at the press conference. After the events of Season 2, players will play alongside Aldore King Rain, the protagonist of the first season, and this arc will bridge the gap between Season 2 and Season 3 as the next season will feature Fina as the main protagonist.

Final Fantasy Brave Exvius: War of the Visions greatly inspired by Final Fantasy Tactics

Next, Fujimoto and Hirono shifted gears and focused on Final Fantasy Brave Exvius: War of the Visions, another mobile free-to-play title expected to launch in Japan this year and go worldwide in the future once localization for their respective regions is complete.

It’s another Gacha game that’s a turn-based strategy game greatly inspired by the 1997 PlayStation classic Final Fantasy Tactics. It’s still set in the Brave Exvius universe but focuses on the content of Ardora as the story revolves around the ongoing conflict between five rival nations. Here’s how Square Enix describes each nation:

  • Leonis - Ruled by the Red Lion Monarch, possesses the power of Visions as well as twin princes.

  • Hourne - The great western kingdom governed by a policy of peace and its Brave and Wise King.

  • Fennes - Where the King of the Savages has organized the barbarian tribes into Ardra's mightiest militant state.

  • Wezette - The great eastern kingdom, over which reigns its icy Despot.

  • Crystal Sanctum - A religious city-state with believers throughout Ardra, founded by one who claims to be God.

War of the Visions is ditching the pixelated character sprites seen in Brave Exvius and will feature 3D characters and environments in an isometric camera view. Height will be a factor in the game’s gameplay similar to Final Fantasy Tactics and you can expect jobs for your characters.

We asked Hirono and Fujimoto if we can expect iconic characters, spells, and abilities from Final Fantasy Tactics to make an appearance as I was hoping for at the very least the ‘Stone Throw’ ability to be in the game but they replied to stay tuned for future announcements.

They did confirm that on launch War of the Visions will feature characters from Square Enix’s MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV Online. Which character/s is yet to be announced but War of the Visions will have the same crossover treatment found in Brave Exvius.

This isn’t the first time Square Enix made an appearance at ESGS. In ESGS 2018, Square Enix held a press conference to promote their upcoming game action game Left Alive, which was set in the Front Mission universe.
