Final Fantasy XVI’s latest trailer reveals Summer 2023 release

During Sony’s June 2022 State of Play, Square Enix ended the show with a new trailer for Final Fantasy XVI, which not only showed new gameplay footage of the game but also revealed that the game will release sometime in Summer 2023.

The trailer showed quite a lot of new lore, characters, and the game’s version of summons in action, showing Ifrit, Odin, Bahamut, Garuda, Shiva, and more. A lot of the footage shown gives the impression that there will be gameplay elements that resemble a fighting game in a colossal scale, with Eikons – the game’s version of summons – battle it out.

Final Fantasy XVI will feature characters called Dominants, humans able to channel the power of Eikons. Two new characters were introduced in the trailer; Hugo Kupka the Dominant of  Titan, and Benedikta Harman, the Dominant of Garuda.

According to a report from Gematsu, Final Fantasy XVI director Hiroshi Takai mentioned that “the game is fully playable from start to finish”, but more work is needed for polish and optimization.
