Monday Impressions: Path of Exile Open Beta

Path of Exile Open Beta impressions I'm a huge Diablo 2 fan, I've played that game countless times with different characters because I just loved the character building. Naturally, Diablo 3 was a no brainer for me to get last yea but it did not scratch that Diablo 2 itch. A great game in its own right, but not the sequel we were expecting. Then there comes Path of Exile, a Free-To-Play Action RPG that comes out of nowhere and has become the answer to satisfy hardcore Diablo fans. It's now on open beta and I'm loving every minute of it.

Is it a Diablo clone? Not even close. Grinding Gear Games threw in a couple of unique features and game mechanics to set it apart from all the other action RPG's out there while retaining the addictive nature we love out of games like this.

There's a lot of new concepts in this game that it actually takes time to get your bearings. Like for the example the passive skill tree. I've spent a good amount of time with this game already and I still feel like I'm nowhere close to understanding what each node in the tree does, and the possibilities of builds for each class is quite a hand full. You need to take your time with Path of Exile, plan it out, when you get an idea on what build or gear you would like to work on, the addiction takes over.

Path of Exile has three acts in total(third act was just implemented for Open beta) and has a good amount of content for a Free-To-Play title. Visually, the game doesn't look appealing at all at this point. The enviroment is bleak, the atmosphere is dark, and the character models is nothing compared to games like Torchlight 2 or Diablo 3, but don't let that shy yourself away from this game, it's the gameplay that you should be looking at among everything else.

You have complete freedom in developing your Path of Exile character. Not only does the massive passive skill tree provides a good amount of viable builds for each of the six classes in the game, the skills you have and of course the gear you wear can all be fixed to your liking.

Skills in the game come in a form of skill gems. In order to use that specific skill gem, you will need to attach it in the right color slot in your gear in order to use it. That alone gives all classes the ability to use any skill in the game. This is a game mechanic hardly seen in games and is very similar to the materia system in Final Fantasy 7 if you guys recall that amazing game.

There's so much to talk about in this game that it's hard to put everything in one post. The ability to upgrade normal items into a random rare, the ladder system, the potion system, the simple pvp, and a barter system that replaced currency (trade an item for another, even with NPCs). What I noticed after playing Path of Exile during closed beta and seeing the improvements done when the open beta started is that Grinding Gear Games is definitely on the right track in creating an addicting Action RPG that would make players play for hours and hours on end. This reminded me very well in my Diablo 2 days and that I want games like these to feel like; Picking a build, leveling him up while going through three difficulty levels, and climbing up the leaderboards  for a bit of competition. Then, start over again with something completely different. The gameplay is deep enough that the replay value is high enough for players to stay invested in this game for years to come.

Should I try it?

You definitely should if you appreciate games like Torchlight and more importantly, Diablo 2. The developers goal with this game is to provide a deep character progression and a unique experience for the hardcore players in this genre. Don't expect a compelling story, don't expect a visually stunning video game, expect this to be an action RPG that would draw you in with its complex game mechanics and well designed gameplay. If you like hunting for the best gear the game has to offer for your character and if you want a game that is easily replayable over and over, this will do the trick. It's free to play so there's nothing to lose really. I urge you guys to give it a try, you will not be disappointed. The game is just in Open Beta and I can't wait for the further improvements and additions they will make in the coming months. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to work on my next Ranger character.

Path of Exile heading to Open Beta on January 2013

The Free-To-Play Action RPG Path of Exile, strongly inspired by Diablo 2, is hitting Open Beta next month. The New Zealand developers Gear Grinding Games made the announcement over at their forums.

It was hinted before that the Open Beta would go live sometime December, but now it's official - Open beta will start next year, January 23, 2013 US time. A bit of a delay, but from what I gathered from other players of the game, a one month delay isn't so bad.

This move to a January release is to prepare for the upcoming issues they might encounter during the Open Beta. Since it's now the holidays, Grinding Gears won't be able to give the Open Beta the support it deserves since some of the developers will be on holiday break. Moving it to next month gives them time to rest up and prepare for the Open Beta.

Path of Exile game systems explanations

Together with the game heading to Open Beta, the game's third act will be available to players. The 0.10.0 patch will be implemented and will include a final character wipe when the Open Beta kicks in.

Path of Exile has been in Closed beta since August 2011.

Path of Exile having another Open Beta this weekend

The Free To Play Action RPG Path to Exile is having another Open Beta this weekend for the whole world to try out. Grinding Gear Games is opening the beta for the weekend for a stress test, and of course giving players a chance to see what Path Exile has to offer.

I joined the last Open Beta Weekend days before the release of Diablo 3 and it's definitely in my watch list. Not only is it Free To Play, it also has a wide variety of unique features. For one, there is no currency system but rather a barter system. Trade your loot to vendors and you get a useful item in return. The skill tree in the game is also huge, don't believe me?

Yea... If you've played Final Fantasy X, then you have an idea on what you're getting into. Not the full shot of the skill tree but you get the idea.

This game has been in development for five years and I love how they mentioned this during their press release for the Open Beta Weekend:

The game is free to play, but does not feature ‘pay-to-win’.

People are taking notes to past mistakes and I like seeing that.

If you love games such as Diablo and Torchlight, this is definitely worth checking out. Beta servers will be up at 5pm PDT on Friday, July 27. Here's the Open Beta FAQ that includes a link to start downloading the game client.

Going to have a busy weekend so hopefully I'll find the time to join the Open Beta.

Here's a trailer to give you an idea...

Weekend, What Are You Playing?

Path of Exile Weeeekkkeeeennnd!! Sorry, a bit too much but hey, weekends are awesome. What are you playing?

Quash: This weekend I played a couple of games, games that would soothe the wait for Diablo 3(Yes I really can't wait). So I started playing Torchlight, an amazing action RPG. Yes, it's a Diablo clone, but definitely the best clone. Even with its cartoon art style, the game screams Diablo, which is a great thing and is exactly what I was looking for. Plus some Diablo 1 and 2 devs who left Blizzard worked on Torchlight, so yes its a clone.  I'm a sucker for action RPG's right now.

Path of Exile

This weekend I also participated on Path of Exile's Open beta stress test weekend. Path of Exile is also an action RPG but will be free to play and only accessible online. It's currently on closed beta but for this weekend only the beta is open to the public in order for the developers to stress test their servers. Again, a Diablo inspired video game. Developers are called Grinding Gear Games and is literally a group of gamer's that felt the lack of action RPG's and decided to make one for themselves. but there's so many features in the game that got me interested. for instance - There's no currency. Yes, an island filled with people exiled from the world did not bother with a currency system, but instead make business by trading an item for an item. Selling all your crap normal gear will earn you items like wisdom scrolls(identifies items), weapon upgrade items and more. believe it or not - Getting stuff like a wisdom scroll and usable items are quite rare, so it works out.

You know those red and blue potions that keep action RPG players alive and kicking against hordes of monsters? They work differently in Path of Exile. Even how you level up and earn skills are quite interesting. This game can't be called a Diablo clone. It has a lot of unique features that could make the game stand on its own without the comparison. The game also has a passive tree where you spend all the point you earn when you level up. The passive tree is just like Final Fantasy X's Sphere grid system and yes it is also massive.

The beta players so far gets access to 2 acts of the game and have a level cap of 60, which is impressive compared to past beta's that give you around only an hour of content.

If your interested in an action RPG that isn't Diablo or Torchlight, this needs your attention. I'm really pleased with the progress of the game and will definitely give this game a go when it comes out officially. And no this isn't an MMO. Players in the beta love comparing this game to the likes of World of Warcraft and Star Wars because it's online.

You can participate with the ongoing closed beta if you choose to support them by buying one of their packs. The cheapest is 10 bucks and earns you 100 points for online store the game will have and a beta key.

KH2 hearts

Migoy: Hopefully this will be my last late entry in a long time. Didn't get to play much in Saturday as I was asleep during most of the day and out during the rest. I did get to try out Mortal Kombat on the PS Vita and it was pretty smooth, a nice handheld port of the gorey fighting game. Got some good time on Sunday though. Finally started playing Kingdom Hearts for real but the differences in combat between the first and the second game clearly shows. Everything was so much smoother in KH2 but KH is still a pretty neat game for it's age.
