Ubisoft Cancels Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake in Major Reset
/Ubisoft is implementing a major organizational reset aimed at improving production and overall game quality. The shake-up includes the cancellation of six projects: four unannounced titles (three of which were new IP), one mobile game, and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake.
The Sands of Time Remake was first revealed in 2020, complete with a trailer and an initial release date of January 21, 2021. The reveal was met with heavy backlash, with many fans criticizing the visuals as not meeting the standard expected of a remake. Ubisoft delayed the project soon after and said it needed more time to reassess its direction.
The remake was originally being developed by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, but progress stalled and updates were scarce for years. In 2022, Ubisoft shifted development to Ubisoft Montreal with the intent of rebooting the project. That reboot ultimately didn’t materialize into anything as the remake has now been fully scrapped.
If there was one Prince of Persia game that deserved the remake treatment, it was The Sands of Time. It’s still one of the series’ best entries, thanks to its time-rewind mechanic that let players correct split-second mistakes, whether that meant undoing a fatal fall, recovering from a botched fight, or approaching puzzles and platforming with more creativity.
Ubisoft states that this reset is intended to “reclaim creative leadership and restore sustainable growth.”
Despite the six cancellations, Ubisoft also announced it’s giving “additional development time” to seven games currently in development to help them reach quality benchmarks. One unannounced title planned for fiscal 2026 is now delayed into fiscal 2027.
This kind of restructuring often comes with consequences, and it’s hard not to read between the lines: a new operating model and “reset” language usually means more cuts are still on the table.

Octopath Traveler 0 is a mixed bag, with some genuinely likeable characters and engaging story arcs, alongside others that fall flat. You then have a final act that had me banging my head against the wall. Still, its satisfying combat system, strong party synergy, and striking visual style make it an enjoyable JRPG overall.
