Helldivers 2 PC File Size Cut by 85%, and Players can Choose to Beta Test it Today

Arrowhead Games announced that, with help from Nixxes, they’ve found a viable way to reduce the file size of Helldivers 2 on PC. It’s still in beta, but when implemented properly, it brings the full install down from about 154GB to just 23GB. A saving roughly 131GB of space.

File Size Reduction will remain in beta for now

While this is great news for the community, Arrowhead isn’t rolling it out to everyone yet. With so many different PC setups out there, pushing it too early could create problems, so it makes sense they chose this route first. For now, players who want to try the slim version can opt into the beta.

So, without shocking the community, they are making those interested in trying out the slim version of the game by opting in to their beta test.

This file reduction patch does affect loading times, as early reports show a few seconds faster, even for HDD users. We’ll if that’s the case as more players test it out.

How to Join

Joining the test is straightforward. Head to Helldivers 2 on Steam, open Properties, go to Betas, and select “prod_slim” in the Beta Participation dropdown.

Once selected, Steam will download an update. If everything goes smoothly, you’ll end up with the much smaller install size. If you join and run into issues, report them to the developers. You can revert to the original version anytime by deselecting “prod_slim.”

If this Helldivers 2 file size reduction patch works as intended and rolls out publicly, it reinforces just how strong Nixxes is as a support studio for PlayStation. They’ve helped ship high-profile PC versions of first-party titles like Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon Zero Dawn: Remastered, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and more.
