Destiny 2 Is Not Dead, Bungie Will Restore Vaulted Content
Bungie has heard the constant feedback from their fans for weeks. Good or bad, it was loud enough to give the studio a clear understanding that there’s a dedicated player base for Destiny 2, and with that, they announced that they are working on restoring vaulted content currently not available in the game.
Bungie Will Restore Vaulted Destiny 2 Content
This announcement was made months after the studio released what was supposed to be their final content update for Destiny 2. Not so final anymore, as Bungie has now changed course and begun work on restoring some of the content that was previously vaulted.
“As we shared in the video, we are beginning the work of bringing vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids back into the game, where they will be available to all Destiny 2 players.” says Bungie in their announcement post.
“Bringing this content back is not as simple as restoring old files. Changes made to Destiny 2 since Beyond Light require us to update lighting, encounters, combatants, and other underlying systems. That work will take time, but it is necessary to ensure returning content meets the stability and gameplay standards of Destiny 2 today.”
If done right, a new player can play Destiny 2 from start to finish narratively, as it’s currently not possible in today’s latest build. The original reasoning behind the DCV was to make the game more sustainable and manageable as Bungie continued adding new content, while making room for new content. In 2020, Bungie vaulted the base campaign Red War, along with destinations including Mars, Mercury, Io, and Titan, as well as Curse of Osiris and Warmind. Forsaken and the Tangled Shore were later vaulted in 2022. Some raids and other activities were also vaulted over the years.
It’s not clear how much will be restored and what will be the first to be unvaulted, but Bungie does plan to share more in the coming months.
The Future of Marathon
With Destiny 2 getting some support back, the future of Marathon doesn’t look as bleak as many would hope. Despite the delay of the September update, Bungie is shifting their focus toward expanding the game beyond the extraction shooter space, which is why the next update will have a permanent PvE mode. They even scrapped the planned seasonal content.
We don’t have a clear picture of everything Bungie has planned, but the studio has outlined a significant roadmap for the coming months, with a smaller update in October followed by the larger Symbiosis update in December.
Somehow, Bungie has a plan, and it feels like it doesn’t involve completely scrapping one title for another, as there was one line that was very important to hear for both Destiny and Marathon fans:
“Marathon is an important part of shaping where Bungie goes next, but it was never intended to replace Destiny.”
It never made sense to have Marathon without Destiny 2, and hopefully the player base that still has faith in the studio realizes they need both to move forward.
Finally, some good news, but time will tell.
