Editor’s Picks – Must-Play & Recently Updated Games for October 2025
October will be a busy month with high-profile titles dropping, so it will be hard to know where to look. If you’re sticking with Game Pass, there’s already plenty to play without spending extra. Here are the standout picks this month:
The Outer Worlds
I jumped back into The Outer Worlds to prepare for its sequel’s release later this month, and I’m reminded that it’s a more tightly packed first-person RPG with witty writing and quirky characters. It’s basically Avowed in space, as you can see a lot of design ideas here that went on to inspire or shape Obsidian’s later work.
The original still holds up today, and if you’re wondering whether The Outer Worlds 2 is worth getting excited about, playing the first game is the best way to find out.
Hades
Hades 2 is out and if you’ve never played the first game now would be the best time to know what the fuss is all about.
This series is still arguably the best roguelike action game out there, not just by level design but on how they integrated the game’s story within the gameplay loop of starting over. You can’t go wrong with Hades, as it’s probably the best work from the masters at Supergiant Games.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
I can’t help but retain Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 in this list…again! It’s October and this game is still my top pick to win all kinds of awards, including Game of the Year. It’s one of the best RPGs I’ve played in this generation, and I find it a steal that it’s available for anybody subscribed to Game Pass. Everything about this game I adored, and while the hype for the game has finally settled, those who have not given this one a try should definitely find some time.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Ever since its release, Hollow Knight Silksong has been the talk of the town, and many agree it could be another strong contender for Game of the Year.
It’s a Metroidvania platformer that can be punishing with its boss encounters and level design, yet rewarding thanks to the many secrets players can uncover. Buckle up—this is a big one. Once you start, it’s easy to get hooked and aim to unlock everything the game has to offer, which can easily take more than 70 hours.
Looking for other games like Hollow Knight to play either in preparation for Silksong or after you’ve completed the game? I created a lengthy list featuring all of the best games you can play that delivers a similar experience.
Grounded 2
Obsidian Entertainment’s Grounded 2 is out in Early Access, giving Game Pass subscribers a chance to try the sequel in its current state—and it’s not bad at all, as I’ve already spent over 20 hours playing. Quite frankly, this is one of the most polished Early Access titles out right now. Most of the features from the first game are intact, while the new additions set Grounded 2 up to be bigger and more ambitious, giving the developers plenty of room to expand even further.
Even at this stage, the scale of the sequel arguably rivals that of the first game in its final form. On release, the plan is for Grounded 2 to be three times larger than the original, and so far, it looks like Obsidian is well on track to make that promise a reality.
I can even put this in the horror category, as playing this game in first-person with spiders or mosquitoes charging at you can, at times, give me goosebumps.
Doom: The Dark Ages
The latest entry in the Doom series embraces brutal melee combat and delivers the most cinematic campaign in franchise history. It’s longer, more story-driven, and just as adrenaline-pumping as ever.
I had so much fun with this one from start to finish, as it was an easy 4.5/5 for me when I reviewed it a few months back.
Editor’s Picks – Overlooked Gems (Spooky Edition)
Some of these titles never got the attention they deserved, while others have quietly sat in the Game Pass library, overshadowed by newer releases. Whether you missed them or need a reminder of how good they are, these picks are absolutely worth revisiting. Especially for the spooky season.
Hunt: Showdown 1896
Yes, this is an extraction shooter where you can play solo or with up to two other players as you hunt a monster for the bounty and try to extract alive. Other players and teams are also after the same monster and can take you out at any moment, making every encounter intense. Each map is filled with various monsters and distinct locations, and as you track your target, it’s a constant challenge figuring out whether a sound came from an AI creature or a player sneaking up to ambush you.
There are so many random elements that every match feels unique. The audio is phenomenal as it’s arguably the best in the business. From the subtle differences in footstep sounds depending on surface, to gauging how far away a noise is or whether it’s above or below you, the sound design is a game in itself. All of this results in battles that get my heart racing and my palms sweating, and when it’s over, I can’t help but jump back in.
Resident Evil 2 Remake
The Resident Evil 2 remake is the title that made me feel like the idea of remaking classics is probably a good idea when done right. Capcom did a fantastic job here that set the foundation for future remakes in the horror series, as we got Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 years later.
If you haven’t played this version of the game, you’re definitely missing out. And if you want more, the third game is also available on Game Pass.
Dredge
A top-down fishing game is something I didn’t think would capture me the way Dredge did as you slowly uncover the many secrets of each character you meet in the game. You gather fish, sell your fish, improve your boat to catch bigger fish, and have enough power and survivability to venture out into the open water. There’s only a set amount of time during the day where you can fish and explore, as when time comes, an eerie creature or presence will haunt you, forcing you to head back home to sell your spoils and fish another day.
Dead Space Remake
Speaking of remakes, the 2023 Dead Space remake didn’t turn as many heads as the Resident Evil 2 remake, but it still satisfied the diehard fans who had been anxiously waiting for its release. When it finally arrived, it proved to be a fantastic recreation of the original, updated beautifully for the modern generation.
The Dead Space series remains one of my favorites in the survival horror genre, thanks to its seamless blend of sci-fi and horror. A remake of the second seems unlikely, especially after the acquisition of EA, but one can still hope.
Aliens: Fireteam Elite
If you’re looking for a game where you can leave your brain at the door, Alens Fireteam Elite is a good option on Game Pass. It’s a 3-play co-op shooter that does a good job at keeping the adrenaline pumping and more importantly gets you invested thanks to it’s satisfying combat as you always feel overwhelmed, but capable enough to keep the waves of enemies at bay. Many can take it as a horror shooter as it’s still waves of Xenomorphs charging at you, and that’s a scary thought in itself.
Progress keeps gameplay fresh and interesting, and the level designs and enemy density make each level replayable. A great game to pull off with some steam, an even greater game for those who can share the experience with a friend or two.
The Rogue Prince of Persia
Ubisoft and developer Evil Empire surprised Prince of Persia fans as they suddenly released roguelike action platformer The Rogue of Prince of Persia during Gamescom 2025. The game was in early access in 2024 and was quickly updated and eventually released in August, a fantastic surprise as when I booted it for the first time I couldn’t let go.
Movement is buttery smooth, traversal feels precise, and combat challenges you without being punishing. Each run encourages new builds and strategies, making it approachable for roguelike newcomers while still rewarding mastery.
