To celebrate the 1-year anniversary of Souls-like action RPG Mortal Shell, developer Cold Symmetry has announced that they are giving the game’s first expansion, The Virtuous Cycle, free for the first 5 days from August 18 to August 23.

Those who own a copy of Mortal Shell can claim their free copy of the expansion right now for a limited time. The Virtuous Cycle is the first big content drop for the Souls-like Action RPG game since it was released exactly 1 year ago, August 18.

The expansion adds a new roguelike mode for added replayability, a new shell (class), and a new transforming axe-katana weapon to master. Once the free promo offer is over, the expansion will cost $9.99 (~PHP500) on various platforms.

Here’s a quick description of the expansion from the developers:

The Virtuous Cycle reinvents your journey through Fallgrim and beyond as adversaries cycle and shuffle upon each death. Demanding and brutal as ever, now you can never be sure what lies ahead. The new expansion also grants players command over Hadern, once your elusive teacher, now yours to master as Mortal Shell’s fifth possessable Shell. Also available in the DLC is the Axatana, Fallgrim’s most venerable weapon. In your hands the Axatana bends to your will, assembling itself into a supreme heavy axe when the moment calls, and detaching into lightning-fast dual katanas when you desire. Unique movesets for both stances are yours to unlock.”

Together with the launch of the new expansion, a Twitch drops campaign is currently underway as viewers that watch streamers play Mortal Shell with Twitch Drops enabled from August 18 to August 23 can earn a series of in-game rewards.

Twitch Rewards are as follows:

  • Watch for 20 minutes: 1 Glimpse

  • Watch for 15 minutes: 100 Tar

  • Watch for 2 hours: weapon skin

  • Watch for an additional 1 hour: Lute skin

  • watch for an additional 2 hours: Foundling Skin

I reviewed Mortal Shell last year and while I did have a few issues with the game it’s still a solid entry to the action RPG genre greatly inspired by games like Dark Souls. The difficulty isn’t as high as other games like it, making it a good introduction to players not familiar with these types of games.

Mortal Shell is currently available for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. The 1-year anniversary also marks the end of the exclusivity deal with Epic Games Store as the game is now available on Steam and GOG.
