Konami celebrates Castlevania’s 35 anniversary with an NFT collection

The Castlevania series has reached a new milestone as this year marks the 35th anniversary of the franchise, and Konami decided to kick off the celebration by announcing a Castlevania NFT collection that will be auctioned off online next week.

The Castlevania NFTs can be viewed in Konami’s website called the Konami Memorial NFT and based on the schedule given by the website, there will be four auctions planned and will last four hours each.

There are fourteen Castlevania NFTs available in this anniversary collection, and it’s a mix of pixel art from the original Castlevania game, background music from the early Castlevania titles, to visual art for Castlevania: Circle of the Moon. There will be one copy of each NFT in the collection.

Those who get to purchase one of these NFTs will have their nick-name listed as the first purchaser of that specific NFT in Konami’s website here. Apparently, according to their ‘First Time Purchaser Campaign’, Konami will have to confirm the nick-name you submit as they don’t want anything “socially unacceptable” on the list.  A weird process but it is the internet.

So Konami is yet another company joining the NFT bandwagon, and with their website called ‘Konami Memorial NFT’ anything is possible in the future and it feels like they are using Castlevania’s 35th anniversary as a way to test the waters before adding more NFTs for different games. Metal Gear NFTs, anyone? How about something from Silent Hill?

Despite public outcry from various gaming communities, the concept of NFTs slowly entering the video game industry seems to be inevitable at this point. Ubisoft has already begun it’s attempt on NFTs with the launch of Ubisoft Quartz last year, selling NFTs for Ghost Recon Breakpoint. Then, Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda started 2022 by showing optimism for NFTs in video games.
