Elden Ring Movie in the Works From A24 and Alex Garland

Bandai Namco Entertainment Asia has announced a surprising collaboration with A24 to produce a live-action Elden Ring movie, with acclaimed filmmaker Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Civil War) set to write and direct the adaptation.

A24 and Alex Garland Tackle Elden Ring

According to the press release provided by Bandai Namco:

“To bring the epic world and intense action of ELDEN RING to film, the project will be led by filmmaker Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Civil War, Warfare) as writer and director. The film will be produced by Peter Rice alongside Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich from DNA, and George R. R. Martin and Vince Gerardis.“

This lineup suggests a serious attempt at translating Elden Ring's bleak, cryptic world into a cinematic experience — a tall order considering the game’s notoriously vague storytelling and dense lore. So, I’m sceptical at best.

Elden Ring is an action RPG set in a richly imagined dark fantasy world. Players explore vast landscapes and dungeons while overcoming brutal challenges and uncovering deep, often hidden narrative layers. Since its release on February 25, 2022, the game has shipped over 30 million units worldwide.

Given those numbers, it's no shock that Bandai Namco is exploring ways to expand the franchise. While the Souls series has always had a loyal fanbase, Elden Ring is the one that broke into the mainstream. It introduced an entirely new audience to FromSoftware's signature difficulty and gameplay designs, many of whom had never touched a "Soulslike" before.

That level of success naturally opens the door for spinoffs and adaptations. What Dark Souls couldn’t quite do, Elden Ring has pulled off, making the leap from cult favorite to global phenomenon.

This new film announcement comes just ahead of the release of Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, which was released last year and, Elden Ring: Nightreign, a multiplayer-focused spinoff, is also set to launch later this month.
