PlayStation 5 Has Surpassed The 10 Million Units Sold Milestone

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that the PlayStation 5, the newest Sony console that remains difficult to buy in the Philippines due to limited stocks, has managed to sell over 10 million units worldwide, making it the fastest selling console in the company’s history. It reached this milestone on July 18, 2021, just a month faster than the PlayStation 4.

It’s a good start for the PlayStation 5, considering the limited supply and the current situation the world is facing. It has a long way to go though as the PlayStation 4 has sold over 115 million units in nearly eight years, and time will tell if the new console can match or even surpass those numbers in the same timeframe.

In software sales, Sony released sales figures showing exclusive titles such as Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales from Insomniac games selling over 6.5 million copies since it launched on November 12, 2020. MLB: The Show 21 from San Diego Studio also found success as the latest game is the fastest-selling title in the franchise’s history with more than 2 million copies sold across all platforms.

Sci-fi rogue-like Returnal from Housemarque sold more than 560,000 copies since it’s release back in April, a decent showing considering it’s a new IP and is only available on the PS5.

The recently released Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is also doing rather well ever since it’s launch last month as Insomniac Games’ latest entry to the Ratchet & Clank series has already surpassed the 1.1 million copies sold.

Millions sold, but the shortage continues

It’s crazy to think that such a milestone was reached as the PlayStation 5 remains to be a difficult piece of hardware to purchase anywhere in the world. At least, at reasonable prices as scalpers continue to sell the console at a higher price range.

But the real culprit as to why we still experience limited stocks is due to the chip shortage currently affecting multiple industries, and the ongoing pandemic is making it difficult for manufacturers to meet the demands of various companies. Access to the new console is slowly improving but it will take longer than expected to reach a point where you’re no longer racing to be one of the first customers to secure a unit in your local store’s recent PS5 restock.
