The Elder Scrolls Online Guide - How to Unlock Subclassing
/The Elder Scrolls Online just got a major update with Update 46, introducing a long-awaited feature by the community—Subclassing. This system is available to all players since it’s part of the base game and isn’t tied to any DLC. Here’s a quick guide on how to unlock this new way to customize your characters.
How to Unlock Subclassing in The Elder Scrolls Online
Unlocking Subclassing in ESO is fairly straightforward, but there’s one key requirement before you can get started.
Subclassing Requirements
To access Subclassing, you must have at least one character at level 50 on your account. New players won’t be able to dive in right away, as this system is meant for more experienced adventurers.
This feature is added to the base game for free. It’s not hidden under a paid DLC pack.
How to Start the Subclassing Quest
Once you have a level 50 character, any character on your account can begin the process.
Open the Crown Store (in-game store) and head to the Featured section.
Look for the free quest starter titled “Quest: A Study in Discipline.”
Claiming this quest will add it to your active character’s journal.
You’ll need to do this per character, but thankfully, it’s a short questline designed to introduce you to how Subclassing works.
Meeting Bahtra at-Hunding
The quest will lead you to Bahtra at-Hunding, an NPC who appears in each major city depending on your faction. Simply follow the quest marker to find her in the correct location.
Once you speak with Bahtra, follow the dialogue to learn the basics of Subclassing. At one point, the quest will ask you to swap one of your class’s skill lines with one from another class. Confirm the swap, and the quest will complete.
You’ll be rewarded with a respec scroll, which allows you to reallocate your skill points, a great bonus considering Subclassing can drastically shift your build.
After completing the quest, Subclassing is unlocked for that character. However, you cannot manage Subclassing from the character menu.
Subclassing will be there in your menu, but to swap or choose new subclass skill lines, you’ll have to return to Bahtra at-Hunding and pay 1,500 gold each time you want to make changes to your subclassing setup.
Subclassing Restrictions
Subclassing doesn’t let you become a jack-of-all-trades. Here are some of the limitations to keep in mind:
You must keep at least one skill line from your original class.
You can only use skill lines from classes you own.
Only one subclass skill line can be equipped at a time.
Class-specific sets and mastery scripts are still tied to your original class.
Things to know about Subclassing
Subclassing is for experienced players as it’s best used if you have multiple characters that have mastered different skill lines. If you do have skill lines from other classes available for Subclassing, you’ll have to know that unlocking and leveling skills from other classes will act differently.
To unlock skills from other classes through Subclassing, they will require two skill points per skill, so it’s a big commitment. Also, leveling these subclass skill lines will be much slower compared to the progression one would get from their original class skill lines. Thankfully, leveling up a skill line is account-wide. For example, if you’ve leveled and maxed out the Animal Companion skill line as a subclass, it will be maxed out for all other character as a subclass.
That’s everything you need to know about Subclassing in The Elder Scrolls Online. Update 46 is now live on PC, alongside the Seasons of the Worm Cult DLC, which brings a new zone and continues the story of ESO’s base game. Console players can jump in when the update arrives on June 18.
