Claire Obscur: Expedition 33 Sells 3.3 Million in 33 Days
/Developer Sandfall Interactive has reached a rather unique milestone with their RPG Claire Obscur: Expedition 33 — 3.3 million copies sold in just 33 days.
The announcement was also shared on social media at an oddly specific time. On my end, it appeared at 10:03, but in other time zones like BST, it was posted at 3:03. You can’t help but smile at how they're tying their success to the number 33.
The success of Claire Obscur: Expedition 33 is staggering on all fronts. Both critics and players are largely in agreement that this RPG offers something truly special. On Steam, it currently holds an Overwhelmingly Positive rating from over 69,000 user reviews. On aggregation sites like Metacritic, it's the highest-rated title of 2025 so far, with a 92 from critics and an impressive 9.7 user score — a rare feat, especially for a debut title and brand-new IP.
I, too, share that sentiment. This is my current Game of the Year contender for 2025. With the halfway point of the year approaching, any titles launching from June onward have some serious work to do. What Sandfall Interactive has delivered hasn’t just entered GOTY territory — it’s earned a spot on my all-time favorites list.
Why Claire Obscur: Expedition 33 Is Dominating 2025
Claire Obscur: Expedition 33 seemingly came out of nowhere for many players, constantly on the lookout for the next standout RPG. While early previews showed promise, with a unique story and an interesting spin on turn-based combat, the final release surprised everyone. It delivered a reactive turn-based system enhanced by satisfying dodge and parry mechanics, stunning visual flair, a captivating musical score, and a narrative that hits hard thanks to its well-developed cast, sharp writing, and impactful plot twists.
It also shows players’ craving for a completely new experience. Something raw and oozing with passion and creativity.
